PlayCanvas Update 15/08/14

This week, PlayCanvas travelled far and wide to attend the world’s biggest games and graphics conferences.

GDC Europe, gamescom and SIGGRAPH

Will (PlayCanvas CEO) headed off to GDC Europe and gamescom this week while Dave (PlayCanvas CTO) travelled to Vancouver for SIGGRAPH. PlayCanvas made a real splash at both and in the next few days, we’ll be writing a blog entry dedicated to each trip.

Features and Fixes:

  • We improved the rendering of the PlayCanvas website at mobile resolutions. Explore the site on your smartphone to see how great the site looks now.
  • Kevin, our Design Guru, has refreshed the design on various ‘logged in’ pages, making navigation clearer and simpler.

PlayCanvas Update 25/7/14

Welcome back PlayCanvas fans,  we have a few new developments, so  here are the updates for this week:

Features and Fixes

  • We’ve added a new opaque blend mode for materials – just set the ‘Blend Type’ option to ‘None’ in the lowermost box in the Material Editor. Just a reminder: left-click on any object twice to display the Material Editor. Note that this now means that when you set the material opacity in the engine you also have to manually (set the ‘blendType’ to pc.scene.BLEND_NORMAL) – this is no longer done automatically.
  • Fixed some general issues with correctly rendering models with transparent materials.
  • ‘asset.resource’ now works for material assets.
  • The GLSL generator in the engine was rewritten to be simpler and more efficient. While you will not see any visual difference, this forms a base to enable us to create some really nice features in the future – stay tuned!

Other News

  • Will, our CEO, spent Thursday evening mentoring indie game devs and other games industry folks at The Games Quarter at IDEALondon. London’s game dev scene just grows and grows and it’s great that PlayCanvas can be involved and support other new up and coming start ups.
  • Dave presented PlayCanvas at the Tech City Elevator Pitch event and totally nailed it, taking us into the final 25. Watch this space for news on the next round, due to be held on August 5th!

That’s all the updates for this week folks, keep using PlayCanvas, stay motivated and make your games and apps as good as they can be. See you next week!

Translation Gizmo: now you can move any selected in 2 dimensions at the same time by clicking on the planes in between the two axes you wish to translate the object over. Also the view of the planes react to your viewpoint – if you look at the model along the x axis you will only see the y-z plane.

Blog_gizmo3 scale

Scaling Gizmo: a new uniform scale control has been added – access by clicking the new white block and drag the mouse to scale in all directions.

UKIE Games Expo

Earlier this week, our esteemed CEO Will Eastcott felt like showing some people the future of web-based gaming and so headed off to the Liverpool International Festival for Business and their games development showcase to demonstrate the PlayCanvas platform.

Philippa Moore, the artist responsible for SWOOOP’s brilliant 3D visuals will be demoing SWOOOP at the LadyCade tonight (Friday 18th) at the London Game Space. Actually, while were on the subject, now might be a good time to try and beat your high score, play it here.

PlayCanvas Update 11/07/14

Despite a tide of sickness this week we still have a great list of updates for all you PlayCanvasers! What would be the phrase you use to describe someone who uses PlayCanvas? I don’t know… anyway, the updates for this week:

Bug fixes and new features:

Our Engineering team have been busy:

  • Updates to the Developer Site. We now have full search functionality on developer.playcanvas.com which makes finding what you need much easier. We’ve also made the API reference a lot nicer to look at.
  • Improved camera zoom in the Designer: zooming the camera within the PlayCanvas Designer could at times be too slow, depending on where your viewpoint was focused this has now been fixed – no more slow-down!.
  • Fixed some issues with creating new materials: sometimes the Create Material button in the Designer would be wrongly disabled but this is now, of course, fixed.
  • Creating and selecting materials is now faster.
  • Some CSS fixes in the dashboard.
  • And finally, we fixed some WebGL errors that occurred when the canvas was too small.

Some engine fixes too:

  • Script attributes of type ‘vector’ are now be correctly converted to pc.Vec3 at runtime
  • Light and camera representations are no longer be shown in the Designer for disabled lights and cameras

Develop conference

Looks fancy doesn’t it? You’d think developers were paid as much as footballers…Dave isn’t actually in this picture by the way, so if you’re playing ‘Where’s Wally’, don’t, it’ll never end.

We were incredibly pleased to be nominated for the Technical Innovation Award at the prestigious Develop Awards last week. David Evans, CTO and co-founder of PlayCanvas put in an appearance, but sadly, we lost out to Oculus and their Rift. Next year, however, the story will be very different.

Develop Magazine

We have been featured in a double-page spread in the venerable Develop Magazine. In the July 2014 issue (issue number 151), our CEO Will Eastcott is interviewed about the unique features of PlayCanvas, our drive to simplify collaboration between game developers and why PlayCanvas went open-source. Check it out!
